Ferguson's seconds threw up the sponge. This was the first in a series of elimination bouts to find a challenger for Jack Johnson's title. During the ref's instructions at the start, Barry reportedly poked Ferguson in the gut causing the big Canuck to paste Barry in the mush with a stiff left jab. This resulted in a general brawl featuring both corners and took the intervention by police to return some order to the ring.

1905-07-18Jack Johnson23-4-6
Douglas A.C., Chelsea, Massachusetts, USALDQ715
referee: Bill Crowley
Enraged by Johnson's insulting patter and left-hook to the belly, Ferguson took advantage of a bearhug by Johnson to drive his knee twice into his opponent's groin. Ferguson had taken the first two rounds, round three was even, but Johnson began driving home a wicked left hook to the stomach to take the fifth and sixth, and one or two may have strayed.

Whittington Park A.C., Hot Springs, Arkansas, USALPTS2020
referee: Pat Early
According to the New York Evening World, Sandy Ferguson was clearly robbed of a victory by the decision of referee Patsy Earl. "Ferguson outclassed his man as a boxer. He hit him when and where he pleased, and several times during the contest had Hart on "Queer Street"." Ferguson decked Hart in the seventh, and in the 13th only the ropes saved Hart from going down again. The crowd disagreed vocifeously with the unjust decision. Referee Earl later stated he gave Hart the nod because he had done most of the leading.
1904-02-06Jack Johnson16-3-6
National A.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USANCNC56
referee: Jack McGuigan
[According to the NY Evening World, Ferguson had been slated to meet Gus Ruhlin Feb 4th at Chelsea, Mass.] Referee McGuigan left the ring in round 5 because Johnson and Ferguson were deemed to be 'faking.' Johnson and Ferguson were substituting for Kid Carter and Billy Stift. Stift had failed to appear and Carter refused to fight Ferguson, so Johnson stepped up.
