Sanders took a heavy battering in the earlier rounds, but hadn't been down until he wilted under a two-fisted attack at 25 seconds of the 11th. Sanders was rushed to Mass General Hospital, but never regained consciousness. He died December 14, 1954, from a blood clot on the brain. James never recovered; after being knocked out in his next bout, he retired.
