1937-01-04John Henry Lewis67-7-4
Convention Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USAWSD1010
referee: Joe McGuigan | judge: Nate Lopinson | judge: Al Leavitt 2-8
Ettore was declared winner at first, Pennsylvania Boxing Commision later arbitrarily changed the verdict. The official scorecards were (round-by-round): 5-4-1 and 4-3-3 for Ettore and 8-2 for Lewis, so Ettore was the winner and is so shown here. Nat Fleischer, on page 24 of the March 1937 issue of The Ring, called it the "worse blow at boxing..in several years." He also stated that the reasons for this attempt to set aside the decision of the officials was not related to a mistake in adding up the scorecards, and that the decision of the Pennsylvania Boxing Commission was made a week after the fight! He also said "By what line of common sense reasoning Commissioner Rainey, who initiated the change in the verdict, and Commissioner McClelland, reached the decision that the change was necessary or that they had the right to overrule the official act of the referee and judges, will remain a mystery." A third commissioner, Chairman McCloskey, refused to vote with his colleagues. McGuigan and Lopinson were reported as scoring for Ettore and Leavitt scoring for Lewis.
