'''Rodolfo Gonzalez pounds Chango Carmona to win title''':<br>
"Rodolfo Gonzalez, a 3-1 underdog from Long Beach, Calif. hammered Chango Carmona of Mexico relentlessly last night and captured the WBC lightweight championship when his beaten foe was unable to answer the bell for the 13th round. Gonzalez took the offensive immediately with both left and right uppercuts early in the fight and a left to the head shook Carmona early in the 2nd round. Gonzalez consistently beat Carmona to the punch and slammed home left and right combinations repeatedly throughout the battle. There were no knockdowns, but the 28 year old Carmona bled from the mouth from the 2nd round on, and his face was battered and puffy midway in the fight and there were cuts near his eyes by the 12th. The fight proved so one-sided for the new champ that the cards of judges George Latka and Larry Rozadilla read 12-0 and 10-0 respectively. Referee John Thomas scored it 10-1, the same as the AP." - Associated Press

*Chango Carmona's official challenger and #1 contender, Pedro Carrasco of Spain, turned down the Olympic Boxing Club's $15,000 guarantee and the offer then went to Rodolfo Gonzalez who earned $10,000 for the title challenge while Carmona earned $30,000.
In the 2nd round, Chuvalo knocked DeJohn back into the ropes and then struck him him several times when he was helpless leaning backwards on the loose ropes, before he went down. George was penalized (apparently because once DeJohn was leaning back like that he was technically down) and the round was awarded to DeJohn 5-3. DeJohn was given a substantial period of time to recover. Chuvalo dropped DeJohn again in the 6th round. A second knockdown in the round could have been from a combination of blows and a push. The referee at first acted like it was a push and no knockdown, because he literally pulled DeJohn up to his feet without counting. However, once DeJohn was on his feet, the referee gave him a count.

"Dick Tiger, the Nigerian middleweight, won a shot against Pat McAteer for the latter's Empire title by stopping Jimmy Lynas, Coventry, in the 7th. Lynas forgot all his boxing by trying to outslug the hard-hitting Nigerian, who revels in a fight, especially when the opposition is willing to meet him halfway. A left hook to the head in the 5th opened a deep cut over Lynas's right eye, and in the 6th the same punch put him on the canvas for 'eight'. The end was in sight during the 7th session when the game Irish lad was dealt some punishment until the bell ended the round. During the rest he was advised to call it a day." -Ring Magazine, May 1958 issue

"Frankie Crawford pulled off the upset of the evening by lasting the full 10 rounds with the 20 year old Bobby Chacon from Sylmar, Calif., who had knocked out 16 of his previous 17 opponents, but this time had to settle for a lopsided 10 round decision. If Crawford had any notions of standing and hitting with Chacon, they were quickly abandoned when Bobby's left to the belly and right to the jaw dropped Frankie late in the 1st round. Frankie got right up and onto his bicycle, peddling for the next five rounds until he suspected that Chacon might be getting tired from swinging and chasing him. In the 7th, he came at Chacon and started throwing a few punches although at that point he needed a knockout to win. In the 9th, one of his best rounds, an over-anxious Crawford, sensing a kill after punishing Chacon in close, was warned by referee Larry Rozadilla for hitting on the break. Each fighter was puffy around the eye, and Chacon's right hand was swollen from landing hard overhand rights on Crawford's head." -Long Beach Press-Telegram
"European middleweight champion Alan Minter of Great Britain outpointed former five time world champion Emile Griffith Saturday in a 10 round supporting bout. The left-handed Englishman controlled the fight from start to finish, sending Griffith to the canvas with a left hook to the side of the head for a compulsory eight-count 20 seconds before the end of the 5th round. Only 30 seconds before that, Griffith, 39, took a standing count of eight when Minter, 25, caught him on the ropes with a combination of lefts and rights to the head." -United Press International
