Allen Franks was of African-American and American Indian heritage. Local newspapers published during his very early boxing career state that he was from Everett, Washington. Later, he is reported to be from the nearby Tulalip Indian Reservation. Thus, Franks likely was a member of The Tulalip Tribes. By late 1930, he is reported by local newspaper accounts to be from LaConner, Washington -- which is a bit farther north of Marysville, Washington. So he may have been a member of the Swinomish Tribal Community. Or a bit of both Tulalip and Swinomoish heritage.
He had an amateur boxing career in the Puget Sound area during early 1925 -- as documented by the Everett Daily Herald newspaper.
According to the November 20, 1934 Bellingham Herald, Frank was 26 years old at this time.
