Bartley Madden died nearly penniless at a Washington, D.C., USA, hospital from injuries received in a 20-foot fall from a landing at the Treasury Building. His wife had died only three weeks earlier. He left behind a young son.
Madden was a tough bird, known as much for his iron jaw as his above-average boxing skills and elusive defence. He was easily one of the best heavyweights to come out of Europe prior to Max Schmeling.
Madden's only published record appeared in the 1927 edition of the Everlast Boxing Record, with an update in the 1928 edition. His fights in this record were only listed, with results but without dates and locations. The fights in the linked record have been verified. The following fights were listed in the published record, but have not been located.
1912: Kid Kraft, W ko 1; Dan Flaherty, W ko 3; Jack West, W ko 7; Johnny Carroll, W ko 3; Harry Price, W ko 7. Presumably these fights were in New York, if they actually occurred.
1913: Joe Schenk, W ko 4.
1915: Jack McCarthy, W ko 9; Sergeant McGill, W ko 3; Jack O'Neill, W ko 2. These fights may have occurred in Ireland, not necessarily in this year.
1918: Tom Cowler, W Pts 10. Despite much searching, this fight has not been found.
