Battling Jim Johnson fought Jack Johnson for the World Heavyweight Championship in Paris, France on December 19, 1913. It was the first time two black men fought each other for the title. After ten rounds, the fight was declared a draw and Johnson retained the title.

Battling Jim Johnson died November 6, 1918, at Boston City Hospital. He had been scheduled to fight Sam Langford in a twelve-rounder at the Crescent Athletic Club in Lowell, Massachusetts, but the fight was postponed because of the Spanish influenza. While waiting for the bout to be rescheduled, Johnson contracted the disease. He was removed to the hospital, where he developed pneumonia and died a few days later.
