Berthold Klann (or Klam) was shot dead at Milwaukee, WI, circa September 20, 1911, by 52-year-old William M. Nichols, who claimed self-defense. Klann was reported as being a 23-year-old amateur boxer (with 27 wins and 2 draws) who had won the Pacific Coast Lightweight Championship, but Lee Croft disputed this claim, saying that it was he (Croft) who had won the 1908 title.
