In 1952 Bill Tate won the Chicago Tribune Golden Gloves' championship at middleweight and representing Chicago won an Intercity Golden Gloves' middleweight title stopping Genorace Armstrong at 1:25 of the 2nd.

In 1953 fighting out of Great Lakes, IL he won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. Sammy Williams of Omaha, NE in the middleweight division by decision and the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship stopping William Ford at 2:26 of the 1st in the middleweight division.
