Charley White came from a fighting family; his brothers Jack White and Billy Wagner were also boxers.

White was considered to be one of the great left hook artists of his generation. He fought and beat many of the great fighters of the early 20th Century, including champions like Ad Wolgast, Willie Ritchie, Freddie Welsh, Frankie Conley, Johnny Dundee, Owen Moran, and Matt Wells.

He would have been a world champion a couple of times over except for the "no decision" era, when champions could only lose their titles by being knocked out.

In 2003, White was named as one of The Ring Magazine's 100 Greatest Punchers.
