2002-08-23 : Cory Spinks 147 lbs beat Rafael Pineda 147 lbs by TD at 3:00 in round 7 of 12

Just when Cory Spinks thought he was finished with controversial endings to his fights after a disputed loss against IBF welterweight champion Michele Piccirillo in April came Friday night's bout with Colombia's Rafael Piñeda. Only this time, Spinks was not denied victory as he scored a technical split decision over Piñeda in the main event of a card at Miami Jai-Alai.

Fighting as the main event on ESPN2's ESPN Friday Night Fights, the two took turns imposing their wills on each other, with Spinks flashing his masterful counterpunching, only to have Pineda storm back with accurate powershots. The 36-year-old Pineda fought very well and used his superior experience to move Spinks into several hard right hands.

An accidental clash of heads early in the seventh round opened a deep cut on Spinks' right eyelid and between the seventh and eighth rounds, Spinks complained that the butt-induced gash over his eye was affecting his vision, forcing the ringside doctor to halt the bout. Pineda, protested in his corner and asked for a rematch in front of a partisan Colombian crowd that booed the decision.

Compubox punch stats:

Pineda connected on 73 of 169 jabs; Spinks 38 of 273.

Pineda connected on 75 of 188 power shots; Spinks 81 of 220.

Pineda connected on 148 of 357 total punches thrown; Spinks 118 of 493.
