Eddie Santry acted intermittently as a referee near the end of his boxing career. He had also worked as a trainer, sparring partner, and cornerman for Battling Nelson. He was a boxing pupil of former lightweight boxer and Chicagoan Harry Gilmore during his early career. Gilmore also helped mentor Chicagoans Tommy White, and champion Harry Forbes.
He was elected as a State Representative in Illinois in November 1914. He sponsored a bill to administer legalized boxing in Illinois which to his disappointment failed to pass in 1915.
He died in Chicago, January 29, 1919. His death was attributed to a "nervous breakdown"; his friends said his heart was broken over his defeat for the state legislature in 1918.
