After losing his national bantamweight crown to Jimmy Carruthers, Elley Bennett moved up a class and knocked out Ray Coleman at Sydney Stadium in the 15th round, and walked away with the right to call himself the new Featherweight Champion of Australia. Bennett achieved that sensational ending with little time remaining in the final round and after being behind on points throughout the contest. He provided an exact replay of that dramatic event a mere six months later when, in defence of his crown, he once again knocked Coleman out in the 15th round to retain his position as the Australian Feathwerweight champion.

A hard-punching bantamweight, Elley was twice ranked in The Ring Magazine's Annual Ratings: being number three in 1949, and number five in 1950. In a total of 59 bouts, his record was 44 (40) - 13 (2) - 1 with one no contest. He died on 31st August 1981.
