Elmer W. Ferguson
Sportswriter & Editor
Elmer W. Ferguson (1885-April 26, 1972) was the long-time Sports Editor of the Montreal Daily Herald (Montreal, QC, Canada), and the founding Secretary of the Montreal Athletic Commission in 1922. He was the Montreal Herald Sports Editor from the very early 1920s until at least the 1950s, if not longer. His popular "The Gist and Jest of It" sports column ran in that newspaper for many years as well.
Although quite knowledgeable about most sports, Ferguson took a special interest in boxing and ice hockey. To this day, the Hockey Hall of Fame annually presents its Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award "in recognition of distinguished members of the newspaper profession whose words have brought honour to journalism and to hockey."
