- According to the Dec. 10, 1949 Tacoma News Tribune, Angle first got interested in boxing some 30 years earlier as a member of Troop B National Guard. He had considerable experience as an amateur boxer but never turned professional. He had also managed some boxers. For years he had been in the automobile business, but at the time was a Tacoma food broker. Angle was an uncle of World Middleweight Champion Freddie Steele; it was he who brought Steele as a youngster to manager Dave Miller. Angle was reviving the Dave Miller Boxing Club in early 1950, with Jimmy Fitten as his matchmaker.
