  • The fighters agreed to a catchweight of 144 pounds.
  • Pacquiao was guaranteed $22 million and Marquez $5 million. [1]
  • Pacquiao floored Marquez three times in the first fight and once in the second, but there were no knockdowns in this bout.
  • Pacquiao was cut over his right eye by an accidental headbutt in the tenth round. The cut required twenty-eight stitches. There was talk of a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5, 2012, but that was ruled out when Dr. Jeffrey Roth, the Las Vegas plastic surgeon who stitched up the cut immediately after the fight, informed promoter Bob Arum that Pacquiao would not be able to spar until April 1. [2]
  • Had Marquez won the twelfth round on Judge Dave Moretti's scorecard, the bout would have ended as a draw.
  • HBO polled a group of boxing writers and experts after the fight: 46% saw Marquez winning, 42% saw it a draw and 12% saw Pacquiao winning.
  • According to CompuBox statistics, Pacquiao outlanded Marquez in nine rounds. Marquez outlanded Pacquiao in just one round (the eighth), and they landed an equal number of punches in two rounds (the third and ninth). In terms of power punches landed, according to CompuBox statistics, Pacquiao outlanded Marquez in eight of the rounds.
  • After the decision was announced, some of the pro-Marquez crowd reacted by throwing food, ice and beer; a beer can hit a ringside writer, though no injuries were reported.
  • Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, Marquez's manager and trainer, was so upset after the fight that he said they might file a lawsuit against the judges who awarded the decision victory to Pacquiao. However, they never did sue. [3]
  • According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the fight drew a sellout crowd of 16,368 to the MGM Grand Garden Arena and sold the most tickets (15,498) for a boxing match since Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. The massive turnout generated $11,648,300, the ninth all-time best boxing gate in Nevada history.
  • The bout generated 1.4 million pay-per-view buys in the United States. It was Pacquiao’s best pay-per-view total ever. It exceeded Pacquiao’s previous best against Oscar De La Hoya, which drew 1.25 million buys.
  • An estimated 37.2 million fans watched the fight on the Azteca network in Mexico, making it the most watched boxing match ever in the country.
  • The fight was named 2011 Event of the Year by The Ring Magazine. [4]
