Bob Soderman of the Chicago Tribune reported: "It was pretty even for six rounds, but in the 7th Joe started landing with heavy punches and softened Artie up for the knockout in round eight."
In his book Joe Louis: The Great Black Hope, Richard Bak wrote: "Sykes was knocked cold in the eighth round and remained unconscious for thirty minutes. Joe fretted, vowing to quit if his traumatized opponent didn't recover. Sykes finally was revived in the hospital."
