- Bell, 20, clinched Richard Howard, 16, in the second round of a bout in Bellingham, WA, USA, and then Howard hit Bell twice. Bell backed away and was prepared to go on with the fight when he fell to the floor. He was carried to his dressing room where firemen worked on him with a lung-motor for over an hour to revive him. He soon died of "paralysis of the heart caused by a direct blow," concluded physicians after an autopsy. The crowd had been unaware of the fatal result. This apparently was Bell's professional debut.
