Before joining the Air Force, Bey, who was then known just as Henry Bunch was a teammate of famed boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. Bey was ranked as high as number two light middleweight in U.S. amateur boxing during the early and mid-1970s. He represented the U.S.A. in several international boxing matches.

Bunch (Bey) later lost a close controversial decision to Walker again in the U.S. Olympic Box-off, and was selected as the (156lbs) light middleweight alternate.

Bunch (Bey), Leonard, Roger Leonard and Derrik Holmes were considered the most gifted boxers to come out of Palmer Park, Maryland, during the 1970s.
