Henry Akinwande was born in London, England and moved to Nigeria as a 4-year-old. In 1986, he returned to England and represented Great Britain in the 1988 Olympic Games.

  • Knocked out Jeremy Williams in three rounds to win the vacant WBO Heavyweight Championship on June 29, 1996.
  • Relinquished the WBO title after two defenses to fight Lennox Lewis for the WBC title on July 12, 1997. Akinwande was disqualified in the fifth round for excessive holding.
  • Was scheduled to fight Evander Holyfield for the WBA/IBF Heavyweight Championship on June 6, 1998 at Madison Square Garden, but the fight was canceled after Akinwande tested positive for hepatitis B.
