The non-profit International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) was created in May 1982 by boxing historians from throughout the world. (As of 2011, it has some 150 members, most of whom are Editors.) Since its inception, the IBRO has had four directors: John Grasso, 1982-1988; the late Tim Leone; 1988-1994, International Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee Ralph Citro; 1994-2000; and Dan Cuoco 2000-present.

Membership in IBRO is open to anyone having an interest in boxing research, statistics, or history. Annual membership dues are $63.00 for members residing in the United States and $90.00, for members residing outside the United States. A reduced membership fee option of $45.00 is available for those who prefer a greener approach (less paper, postage, etc.).
