  • Location: Earls Court Arena, Kensington, London, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Tommy Little

"Joe Brown, world lightweight champion, Tueday night cut the nose of European and British champion Dave Charnley in the 5th round and then went on to retain his title on points over 15 rounds. A sell-out crowd of 18,000 saw the fight at London's Earl's Court Stadium. There were no knockdowns in Brown's 10th title defense - a world record for the division. The fight looked completely one-sided until Charnley, his face a gory mess from blood spurting from the cut on his nose, came out in the 13th round seeking a KO. Charnley waded in with everything he had in the 13th and for a time he had "Old Bones" in trouble. They swapped punches in a desperate brawl. Charnley's fight set the Stadium alight. Brown went on the defensive for one of the few times in the fight." -Associated Press

  • Referee Tommy Little was the sole official
  • Purses: Brown - $50,400, Charnley - $28,000
  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 8-3-4 Brown

  • "Man, you get to expect this kind of thing when you're fighting away from home. Afterall, this isn't Houston." -Joe Brown, commenting on the booing, brawling, bottle-throwing after the decision was announced.
