1972-12-16 : Jose Legra 123½ lbs beat Clemente Sanchez 129¼ lbs by TKO in round 10 of 15
- Location: Plaza de Toros Monumental, Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico
"Jose Legra of Spain dropped Mexico's Clemente Sanchez 11 times Saturday night and won the WBC version of the featherweight championship when their fight was stopped in the 10th round. Sanchez had vacated the title earlier in the day when he failed to make the 126 lb. limit for the scheduled 15 round championship bout. Legra, who weighed 123 1/4 pounds to Sanchez' 129, completely dominated the bout, knocking the ex-champion down twice in the 1st round, three times in the 2nd, once in the 6th, four times in the 9th and once in the 10th. The 11 knockdowns suffered by Sanchez rank among the most one-side championship bouts in history." -Associated Press
- Sanchez was given four hours to lose three pounds after weighing in at 129. He returned later and stated he could not make the weight and WBC President Ramon Velasquez declared that the fight would go on regardless, and if Legra won he would be declared champion, but if Sanchez won, the title would be declared vacant.
- Sanchez was also fined $400.00 for refusing to shave his beard for the fight.
