Tanabe won a bronze medal in the 1960 Olympic games at flyweight. His total amateur record was 115-5 (30 KO). Tanabe appeared headed for a title shot, when was forced to retire in July 1967, due to a detached retina in his right eye. Tanabe, subsequently lost vision in the eye two years later.
