Bennett was of Hebrew heritage.

He fought five world champions in his career; Al Hostak, Ceferino Garcia, Freddie Steele, Young Jack Thompson and Fritzie Zivic. Bennett gave the great Freddie Steele one of the hardest fights in Steele's career (though losing, he broke Steele's jaw).

In 1935 Bennett was the Washington State Welterweight champ.
