  • OPBF Bantamweight Title (1st defense by Tunacao)

Bout Summary

In a rematch, ex-WBC flyweight champion Malcolm Tunacao of the Philippines came forward and took the fight to his opponent with solid counter combinations, retaining the OPBF bantamweight title by decision over 27-0-1 WBC # 5 Bantamweight Kohei Oba in an upset in Japan. Oba appeared to win the first round with left hooks and looking rights landing quicker than counterpunching Tunacao, but Tunacao figured out his style after that. Southpaw Tunacao, 31, likely won a WBC bantamweight title shot against the winner of Fernando Montiel vs. Rafael Concepcion in Mexico. Tunacao and Oba fought to a 12 round split decision draw in Japan in their previous encounter in 2006. Tunacao is unbeaten in seven bouts (5-0-2) extending past the tenth round.
