Bout Summary

Fighting in front of his home crowd, Cotto controlled the action throughout and likely earned each round. He peppered his opponent with hooks to the head in the opening round as Maussa attempted to use his height and reach advantage to work with a jab. Maussa pressed the action in Round 2 and outworked Cotto, but struggled to land against his quicker opponent. Cotto moved more in the round and looked to catch Maussa with heavy counters. Cotto scored a flash knockdown at 0:55 of Round 3 when a right hand caught Maussa and caused his knee to touch the mat. He was up immediately, and following the mandatory eight-count, action continued. Cotto continued to land big shots as Maussa, who did throw, often dropped his guard after punching. By the end of the round, Maussa had developed bruising and a cut on his right cheek. In Round 4, a right hand from Cotto opened a cut on Maussa's left cheek as well. Both cuts would stream intermittently down this face for the remainder of the fight. Cotto continued to pile up rounds over the fifth, sixth, and seventh landing the cleaner, heavier shots. Maussa, to his credit, was game and withstood some big punches but failed to land enough to keep his opponent at bay. In the 8th Round, a cut opened to the left eyebrow of Moussa. At 2:00 of Round 8, the referee paused the action to have the doctor take a look at the cuts. At that, someone from Maussa's corner came up on the ring apron and waved for the bout to be ended.
