Michael Miles Janic was tutored early by Harry Greb. He fought in northern California in the early 1930s, winning most of his lightweight bouts. He was known for his tough, forwardly aggressive style.

Janic enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, serving 23 months in the South Pacific as a jungle scout. He fought in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and Guam with the Third Marine Division. He was awarded the Navy Cross for single-handedly rescuing two wounded comrades while under fire and being wounded three times himself.

He became good friends with Barney Ross (also a wounded WWII veteran) and Max Baer.
