  • 1955 Nick Spanakos won the sub-novice New York Daily News Golden Gloves at bantamweight vs. John Simms, being reported originally from the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY, he trained at the Police Athletic League's Miccio Center.
  • 1961 he won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves' open championship vs. Henry Hurley at featherweight, he trained at the Empire Sporting Club in New York City.
  • Member of the U.S. 1960 Olympic Boxing Team. Lost in the first round of the Rome Olympics featherweight competition on points to Boris Nikanorov of the Soviet Union 0-5. According to the UPI, the decision was booed.
