Pete Toro won the 1960 Open New York Daily News Golden Gloves championship. Toro defeated James Hogan of the West 17th Street Parks Department Gym in the finals to win the championship. Toro trained at City Youth Organization Gym in New York City. In the same year he won the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions by decision vs. Joe Williams, and the Intercity Golden Gloves championship by decision over Ferd Hernandez. All of his titles were in the welterweight division.
