Katz worked as a company manager for a number of non-boxing related touring acts, including the rock band KISS, before entering the boxing world in the late 1970s and working as a matchmaker for such promoters as Top Rank, Sugar Ray Leonard and Butch Lewis, among others. Since 2004 he has served as the matchmaker for Northeast Promotions.
Katz was the matchmaker responsible for matching Eric (Butterbean) Esch with Mitchell Rose on a Top Rank card at Madison Square Garden in 1995, a fight in which Esch suffered his first career loss when he was knocked out in two rounds. Top Rank president Bob Arum was reportedly very displeased with Katz as a result.
