Rudy Sawyer defeated Henry White of Cincinnati, Ohio, to win the welterweight title at the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions on March 11, 1954.

Sawyer faced Reybon Stubbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Intercity Golden Gloves Tournament in New York City on March 22, 1954. Stubbs, who won the welterweight title at the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, defeated Sawyer on points.

As a professional, Sawyer was trained by Sandy Saddler.
