By the end of 1933 Tiger Hairston had reportedly fought 36 professional bouts, having scored 18 knockouts. While fighting on the road, Hairston was often billed as Tiger Harris.
Hairston helped prepare Joe Louis for his 1937 world title fight with champion Jim Braddock. A June 20 1937 United Press wire reported on a sparring session between the two at Kenosha, Wis., halted in round 2 because of rain, that 'more than 2000 spectators in Lake Front Stadium saw a negro sparring partner, Tiger Hairston, batter the challenger across the ring with a barrage to head and body - press the Bomber against the ropes and hammer him there. This amazing finale came in the second round, and it caused murmers of astonishment amongst the fans who stood or sat in the light rain. They scarcely could believe their eyes. It seemed that Hairston, a mediocre sparmate, must be the challenger - not Louis.'
