On July 29, 1988, Molinares faced WBA welterweight champion Marlon Starling in a title bout in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Molinares, trailing on the scorecards, dropped Starling with a devastating right after the 6th round bell had rung. Starling, who sprained his right ankle when he fell, was counted out by referee Joe Cortez. Molinares was initially declared the winner by knockout, but the contest would subsequently be declared a no contest by the the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. However, the WBA upheld the original result and considered Molinares its champion.
Shortly after the bout, Molinares was hospitalized for severe depression, and he abandoned the WBA title in December 1988. He fought only twice more and was knocked out in both fights.
