In 1957 fighting out of Kansas City, MO he won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions vs. Manny Elias of Los Angeles, CA by decision at bantamweight and represented Chicago and won the Intercity Golden Gloves' championship at bantamweight by stopping Thomas Smith at 1:21 of the 3rd.
