Willie Richardson was the lightheavyweight champion of the 1957 World Diamond Belt Tournament, held at Seattle, Washington (USA).
Per the Eugene Register-Guard newspaper, Richardson was suspended multiple times in his career for different occurrences including failing to appear for a fight. On Feb. 10, 1965, Richardson attacked Roger Rischer as the two were in the ring being announced before their rematch. Richardson's handlers claimed Rischer called their fighter a punk as he entered the ring. "As referee Vern Bybee summoned the fighters for instructions, the challenger (Richardson) rushed out and kicked Rischer in the groin and followed up with more kicks and a looping overhand punch. Minutes later, Richardson tried to renew the attack outside the ring." Ranking heavyweight Eddie Machen, who was sitting ringside, wrapped Rischer in a bear hug while Richardson was pinned to the floor by officers. He was later given tranquilizers. Referee Bybee said he planned to request that Richardson receive a lifetime ban for his outburst. The fans in attendance were refunded their money and the bout was ruled as cancelled. Richardson returned to the ring eight months later.
