Announced retirement from boxing on 10/19/2001 undefeated, just two months after winning the WBA minimumweight title. He said the decision was made after suffering from lumbago for some time and adding that he no longer had the motivation to be a fighter. Returned to boxing in July 2003, losing his first fight to Noel Arambulet in a bid for the WBA minimumweight title. Regained the title by beating Arambulet in a rematch in July 2004.
