In a televised bout part of which can be found on youtube, Alexis Arguello landed a straight right hand, a one punch kayo that knocked out Kevin Rooney just before the bell of round two. Rooney had won 19 of 20 Wlterweight fights coming into this bout, with the lone loss being to future world Junior Middleweight Champion Davey Moore. For the Arguello fight, Rooney dropped to 140 pounds for the first and only time of his career to campaign as a Junior Welterweight. Arguello, who had won 18 consecutive title fights in three weight classes coming into the bout with Rooney, was also fighting for the first time at 140 pounds.
Rooney appeared competitive against Arguello till the bout ended. Although he did not enjoy success as a fighter from this point on, Rooney went on to become the assistant trainer (under Cus D'Amato) and later trainer of future World Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in D'Amato's trianing camp in Catskill, New York. Although Arguello won this bout, he was unsuccessful in two attempts to win the Junior Welterweight title in this weight class.
