Alexander was an outstanding amateur boxer. In March of 1977 Alexander was in a national televised bout, after he won the South section of the Chicago City tournament. Alexander lost a decision in the 156 lb. city championship to veteran Pete Podgorski. Muleman later won two amateur titles in the middleweight division. Alexander then turned professional in 1982 and fought until 1984 when an eye injury forced him to retire before he was able to reach his full
potential.
