The Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year (or BWAA) Edward J. Neil Trophy was first given in 1938. The trophy was named for Edward J. Neil, an Associated Press sportswriter and war correspondent, who died of shrapnel wounds in 1938 while covering the Spanish Civil War. This award was renamed for Sugar Ray Robinson in 2009.
