The BWAA Fighter of the Year received the Edward J. Neil Trophy from 1938-2008. The trophy was named for Edward J. Neil, an Associated Press sportswriter and war correspondent, who died of shrapnel wounds in 1938 while covering the Spanish Civil War. The award, starting in 2009, has been renamed for Sugar Ray Robinson.
