1974-08-08 : Danny Lopez 125½ lbs beat Masanao Toyoshima 126¼ lbs by KO at 2:59 in round 3 of 10

  • Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
  • Referee: Larry Rozadilla

"Danny 'Little Red' Lopez had to come off the deck in the 3rd round to knock out Japan's Masanao Toyoshima in the main event Thursday night at the Olympic Auditorium. As early as the 1st round, Lopez had his opponent in trouble, scoring two knockdowns in the round with long rights to the chin. The second round was all Lopez, who outpunched Toyoshima 10-1, and to the surprise of all managed to survive the round without going down. After a brief exchange at the start of the 3rd, Lopez lunged at Toyoshima, who threw a picture right to catch the oncoming Lopez smack on the chin, sending him flat on his wallet. Getting up, Lopez wisely started using a stiff left jab to stay off a recharged Toyoshima. After sampling a series of Lopez' punches, a game but outclassed Toyoshima collapsed on the canvas to be counted out at 2:59 of the round." -Pasadena Star-News

  • "I still get hit too often with rights. I guess I'll have to tie my left hand around my head for a month to teach me to keep it up." -Danny Lopez
