1939-05-23 : Pedro Montanez 144¼ lbs lost to Davey Day 137 lbs by TKO at 2:37 in round 8 of 10

"Referee Frankie Fullam halted the bout at 2:37 of the 8th and called the commission physician, Dr. William H. Walker into the ring to look at Montanez's badly gashed left eyebrow. Dr. Walker refused to permit blood-smeared Pedro to continue and Fullam awarded Day the victory on a TKO. Day, who was the 13-5 underdog, had taken only one of tonight's scheduled 10 rounds. That was the 3rd. He fought on even terms in the 4th. Montanez forced the fighting in most of the rounds, barraging Day's body and head with whistling hooks. Day tried to counter gamely and after opening the brow gash in the 2nd, used it as a target for left jabs and straight rights during the remaining sessions." - United Press

Day was "clearly beaten as far as the fight had gone, although the battle he put up was a gallant and credible one." New York Times

The Chicago Tribune wrote that "Day's victory was a popular one" and that most ringsiders had the fight even going into the eighth round. The Hartford Courant also had the fight even going into the eighth round.
