Alexander likely took the first two rounds out-boxing Maidana. He looked to keep himself just out of range of Maidana's punches and catch him coming forward or slipping Maidana's attack and countering with combinations. Maidana came out with added aggression in Round 3 and looked to rough up Alexander. The two often exchanged during breaks or while holding the other man. A cut opened on the right eyelid of Alexander late in the round that he would paw at throughout. Alexander had a strong second half of Round 4 by evading Maidana's come forward approach and landing with good combinations. Maidana continued to press forward in the 5th but struggled with accuracy. Alexander closed the 5th Round well getting Maidana to walk into some counter punches highlighted by a straight left hand. A body shot hurt Madiana in the final minute of Round 6 and he went to the mat as Alexander pressed him down. It was ruled correctly not to be a knockdown. Alexander threw combinations to close the round as Maidana appeared to be in a bit of trouble of going down. Maidana opened Round 8 with success in the opening minute, but was hurt at 1:15 by a straight left to the body. Alexander added a left, right combination upstairs that stung Maidana and sent him backpedaling and again appearing to be in danger of going down. He was able to gather himself enough and made it through the round. The final two rounds went much of the same as the bulk of the fight with Maidana coming forward but struggling to land and Alexander countering.
