Don Trella grew up in the Waterbury, Connecticut area watching fights with his father and grandfather. On the recommendation of Harold Lederman, Trella received his first position in the sport refereeing amateur fights. He began judging professional bouts in 2001 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, where he also works in human resources.
