Eleoncio Mercedes was shot to death in Santo Domingo during an altercation with an army officer following a traffic accident. Mercedes represented the Dominican Republic as a Light flyweight at the 1976 Montreal Olympic games. He was stopped in the first round of his opening round bout to Alexander Tkachenko of the Soviet Union.
