Action was paused midway through the round as Carew lost his mouthpiece. Carew closed the roound landing with a flurry and a right hand upstairs as the bell sounded. In the 4th, Augustus began to take control picking apart the bigger man's intermittent defense. A clash of heads early in the round opened a cut on the outer corner of Carew's right eye. Despite a seven-inch reach advantage, Carew was not able to keep Augustus at a distance which allowed him to walk right in, find his range and throw effective combinations. In Round 7, Augustus came out dancing and clowning with his hands down but was able to find success with counterpunching. Action was paused again in Round 7 as a left hand from Augustus caused Carew's mouthpiece to fly out. He was warned that if it happened again he would receive a point deduction. Midway through the round, Augustus began to bleed from the nose and finished the round in the southpaw stance. In the 8th, the two traded big shots with Augustus landing heavier and more consistently. After trading, Carew again lost his mouthpiece. At that, he was deducted one point by Referee Johnny Callas. Just a few moments later his mouthpiece came out again and he was again deducted a point. As the round concluded, Carew was against the ropes taking punches and again lost his mouthpiece. Following the round, Carew's corner called an end to the bout.
