In an internationally televised bout on the undercard to the De La Hoya-Pacquiao Welterweight main event, unbeaten WBO Super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (24-0, 22 kayos) retained his WBO World Title with a first round stoppage of challenger Sergio Manuel Medina (33-2, 18 kayos). Lopez scored three quick knockdowns of Medina, and referee Joe Cortez waived off the bout after the third knockdown at 1:38 with Medina on the canvas down and out. Medina landed only one punch in the entire title bout.
Less than a week after the fight, Medina caused a stir when he claimed that he took a dive in the first round. He further claimed that Lopez's handlers had threatened his life if he didn't lose in the opening round. However, Medina's manager and Lopez's team immediately refuted the comments. Finally, Medina himself admitted he had made up the story as an excuse for his less than stellar performance.
