  • NABO Heavyweight Title (1st defense of Adamek)

Bout Summary

In a cautious war for the IBF International and NABO heavyweight titles, Adamek retained his belts by twelve rounds decision over a bigger but slower Michael Grant. At 6'1 1/2" and 217 pounds, it was obvious from the start Tomasz Adamek, who looked like a cruiserweight, could not overpower 6'7" and 261 pound heavyweight Michael Grant with anything he threw. So Adamek played 'jackrabbit', jumping in with a strong overhand left or right hand and then jumping out while moving at all times. Adamek had to do so, for to stay inside and attempt to throw any combination would be met by Grant's punching power. Grant fought a much better fight against Adamek than Chris Arreola, and he did it with cautious counter punching and frequently cutting off the ring. Adamek had a cut over the right eye but it did not affect his vision or the bout. Adamek threw more punches by volume and was the aggressor. In the twelfth and final round, Grant had the tiring Adamek out on his feet and in serious trouble by landing big power punches that scored, but failed to press his advantage, which allowed Adamek to run and survive.

After the decision was announced, heavyweight contender Monte Barrett, seeking to come out of retirement for "one more fight," entered the ring to congratulate the participants and challenged Adamek to fight him in Fall 2010. In the post fight press conference, promoter Kathy Duva stated Adamek's next bout will depend on "how fast he heals" (in reference to the cut). A crowd of nearly 11,000--almost all flag waving Polish fans for Adamek--cheered him and booed Grant, but was quiet before the main event. At the end of the first round, Adamek pushed Grant while Grant was throwing a right hand, and both fighters crashed to the canvas in Adamek's corner. No knockdown. The last four bouts on the card were televised in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Poland. A clean bout with little holding. Grant was a good loser. "I take my hat off to Adamek. he's a tough guy." Adamek stated " I felt I won all 12 rounds." At ringside, Adamek appeared to win rounds 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 11. Grant appeared to win rounds 1, 6, 9 and 12. Round 5 appeared close. The bout was mostly head punches. Occasionally Grant threw an uppercut. Body work was nill. Despite this loss, Grant called out Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko in the post fight press conference and stated "I'm ready." Overall this was a well fought, highly competitive bout.
