1948-07-12 : Rocky Marciano 185 lbs beat Harry Bilazarian 175 lbs by TKO in round 1 of 4

  • Location: Rhode Island Auditorium, Providence, Rhode Island, USA

This was the first time Rocky fought under the name Rocky Marciano. It was also his first fight with manager Al Weill and trainer Charley Goldman.

For his first pro fight, Rocky used the name Rocky Mack to protect his amateur status. His friend Allie Colombo arranged the fight and worked his corner.

After winning his pro debut, Rocky returned to the amateur ranks, where he fought under his real name, Rocco Marchegiano.

Rocky changed his name from Marchegiano to Marciano at the suggestion of Weill, who said his real name was too hard to pronounce.

Marciano, who was paid $40 for the fight, knocked Belzarian out in the first round. Years later, Belzarian recalled, "The first time he knocked me down, he broke my tooth. Then he knocked me down again. Then I don’t remember anything." [1]
